Copal Tree Lodge in 60 Seconds

The Fishing

If you want to chase permit with a fly, you’ve come to the right place. While other destinations may claim (perhaps rightfully) to be the permit capital of the world, there is no doubt that the Punta Gorda area is second to none. In the right conditions, it is not unusual to get more than a dozen shots a day at (sometimes very big) permit.

The Lodge

Let’s just tell it like it is: This place is sweet. Less a hardcore fishing lodge and more a high-end jungle escape, Copal Tree Lodge is, in a word, beautiful. Here, you get to enjoy first-class comforts, dining and drinks with world-class fishing just a short ride away. It doesn’t get much better.

The Staff

The lodge staff at Copal Tree Lodge is excellent and very accommodating. Copal Tree Lodge does not employ its own fishing guides, but rather partners with nearby Garbutt’s Lodge. For you, that’s an awesome thing. Because the Garbutt brothers are absolutely top notch.

AREA

Compared to other parts of the country, the Punta Gorda area in southern Belize sees little tourist activity. And that’s a big part of the appeal. Copal Tree Lodge is situated in the jungle, just a 10-minute drive from Punta Gorda town and the northern most edge of Amatique Bay. The flats are located just a short, 30-minute (or less) run north from Garbutt’s Marina. Shallow flats offer shots at tailing permit, while some of the deeper flats offer shots at schooling fish.

GUIDES/BOATS

Copal Tree Lodge uses guides from nearby Garbutt’s Fishing Lodge. The Garbutt brothers (Scully, Oliver and Eworth), as well as their extended family, are world-class permit guides.

Species

Again, while bonefish and tarpon can be targeted occasionally, the expectation here is to focus on permit.

Bonefish

Year-round.

Learn More

Bonefish

Bonefish are plentiful around Ambergris. While you might occasionally find a fish of 5-pounds, most fish are on the smaller side. But they make up for their size with a willingness to eat flies. For beginners, guides can take you to “mudding bones,” where you can essentially blind cast without the quickness and accuracy pressures of sight fishing.

Permit

Year-round, peak season is February-May.

Permit

There are more permit around Punta Gorda than perhaps anywhere on earth. You’ll get your shots. But, of course, they’re still permit. And getting the eat is never an easy thing. But the sheer numbers of fish here certainly ups your odds of success.

Tarpon

Year-round for resident fish. May/June-September/October for migratory fish.

Learn More

Tarpon

Tarpon come in two types: Resident fish and migratory fish. The resident tarpon can be found on the flats year-round (fish in the 20-75 lb. range) and in the mangroves (fish under 20 lbs.). Migratory tarpon show up in May/June and depart in September/October. These are the big fish that run 100-150+ lbs.

Accommodations

Copal Tree Lodge

SUITES
Copal Tree Lodge has 16 private suites offering the best in luxury and comfort. Nearly every detail, from the woodwork to the artwork, is sourced from local artisans. All suites have a private entrance, one king or two queen beds, an in-room sitting area, spacious bathroom with walk-in shower, air conditioning and a private veranda (yeah, they’re very nice).

RIDGE SUITES
These suites sit atop a hill above the main lodge and guests access the suites via tram. Suites 13-14 are connected and 15-16 are connected, making the Ridge Suites perfect for groups or families. Some argue that the sunsets from the ridge are the most spectacular in all of Belize.

Aside from those amenities described above, Copal Tree Lodge also offers:

  • Fly shop
  • Pool
  • Exercise room
  • Laundry service
  • Self-guided kayaking/canoeing, mountain biking, hiking
  • Wi-Fi

The luxurious accommodations at Copal Tree Lodge are unlike any fishing “lodge.” You’ll also enjoy food and cocktails made with farm-fresh ingredients.

Food and Drink

The dining experience at Copal Tree Lodge is top-notch. 80% of the ingredients used in cooking come the farm on the lodge property. The farm is all organic and self-sustaining.

The chef creates a new menu each night ranging from freshly caught local fish to organically grown meats. And it’s all fantastic. Insider tip: For the dessert, try the Mayan pudding made from chocolate handcrafted on location.

And who could forget the bar? Ducky, the bartender, is something of a resident celebrity. Like the food, the drinks here also feature farm-fresh ingredients and the staff is quite proud of their “ginger” infused beverages. Try the “Ginger Buck.”
